THIRD SEASON…

Goldstein is a historical novel by German author Volker Kutscher set in the summer of 1931 during the Great Depression, published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch in 2010. It is the third detective novel in the series about detective superintendent Gereon Rath. The plot begins fourteen months after Der stumme Tod.

In addition to the superficial detective story, which is in the tradition of American hardboiled detectives, the book is again characterized by its vivid portrait of the early 1930s in Berlin with violent clashes between the SA and the Red Front, as well as the portrayal of political and economic developments in the late Weimar Republic, including the further strengthening of National Socialism, which is also recognizable for the characters, but not yet comprehensible in its implications with regard to the dissolving republic. In addition to fictional characters, there are also people from contemporary history and historical events, which are portrayed from the point of view of the main character.
